The Caune Cave, located near the village of Opoul-Périllos in the Pyrénées-Orientales region of southern France, is a site of significant historical and archaeological interest. The cave has been an important location for understanding prehistoric human activity in this part of the Pyrenees. Archaeological excavations have uncovered numerous artifacts, including stone tools and pottery, that indicate the cave was used by early humans as a shelter and a place for various daily activities.

The surrounding area is steeped in history, with the nearby ruins of the Château d’Opoul and the fortress of Salaterra offering a glimpse into the medieval past of the region. The strategic location of these structures provided defense and oversight of the plains and the massif of Canigou, contributing to the historical importance of the site.

How to Get to the Caune Cave

Visiting the Caune Cave involves a scenic hike through the picturesque landscape of the Eastern Pyrenees. Here are detailed directions to help you reach the cave:

1. Starting Point:

   • Begin your journey at the parking area near the village of Opoul-Périllos.

2. Initial Ascent:

   • From the parking lot, head to the right along a marked trail. This path will lead you up to the plateau where the ruins of the Château d’Opoul and the fortress of Salaterra are located. Enjoy the stunning views of the plains and the Canigou massif from this vantage point.

3. Descending and Continuing:

   • Descend back along the initial trail and follow the yellow-white markers that veer off to the left.

   • This will bring you to a small access road. Leave the road at a collet (a small pass) and descend into the Planals dels Selvis.

4. Path to Cortal de la Murtra:

   • Continue along the path until you reach the ruins of Cortal de la Murtra.

   • From here, take a right towards els Cabanots.

5. Approaching the Cave:

   • You will rejoin the small access road. Turn left, and after passing the house of Cortal d’en Lalana, take the path on the right.

   • At the first intersection, continue to the left, and do the same at the second intersection at point 337.

   • At the next junction, take a right to access the cave. The Caune Cave is situated atop a small rocky ledge, but the access is straightforward and not challenging.

6. Returning:

   • For your return journey, you can either retrace your steps back to the parking lot or continue along the small paved road until you reach the parking area (which is the route I took).
